The fourth edition of Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football tournament is in full swing. The top four teams are battling for the title, while the best players continue their pursuit of individual awards. Who has stood out from the rest, made history at the 1xCup 2026, and caught the attention of professional club scouts?

Top Scorer Race: Key Storylines

Ezeji Ikenna of Ighalo FC is the leading contender for the 1xCup 2026 Golden Boot and the ₦300,000 cash prize. The prolific striker has recorded nine goals and two assists in seven matches. Despite his team’s elimination, he remains at the top of the scoring charts and has a strong chance of finishing the tournament as the leading scorer.

For a long time, his closest challenger at the 1xCup 2026 was Emeka Sylvester of Ajuwa FA, who scored seven goals and provided three assists in five matches, earning the MVP award three times. However, his team was also eliminated in the round of 16, leaving him with no chance of catching Ezeji Ikenna.

Lawal Muiz of Young Strikers FC and Obiora Sunny of Collins Edwin SC are still in contention. Both have at least two matches left to play: the semifinal and either the final or the third-place match. This gives them an opportunity to overtake Ezeji Ikenna of Ighalo FC. The two forwards currently have six goals each.

Who Will Be Named 1xCup 2026 MVP?

The winner of this award and the ₦300,000 cash prize will largely be determined by the tournament’s final matches. However, Obiora Sunny is already a leading contender for the 1xCup 2026 MVP title. The Collins Edwin SC forward has scored six goals and provided five assists, giving him a strong chance of finishing the tournament at the top of both leaderboards.

Emeka Sylvester of Ajuwa FA and Hafiz Odunayo of Elite Stars FC could challenge the tournament’s leading contenders in terms of combined goals and assists. Both players have won the most MVP awards, with three each.

However, team success is not just about goals and assists; a solid defence also matters. Collins Edwin SC has the best defensive record in the 1xCup. The Gladiators have conceded just three goals in seven matches and kept clean sheets throughout the group stage.

Defender Ejiofor Morgan has been a key figure in the tournament’s strongest backline. If Collins Edwin SC continues its successful run, he could also earn a place on the shortlist for the 1xCup 2026 MVP award.

Battle for the 1xCup 2026 Golden Glove

The race for the tournament’s best goalkeeper award and the ₦250,000 cash prize continues. Ebitu Michael of Newhope Naija FC remains at the top of the leaderboard with four clean sheets, but Chidera Maduka of Collins Edwin SC is close behind.

The Gladiators’ goalkeeper still has two matches left to play and an excellent chance of overtaking his rival in the clean-sheet rankings, especially given Collins Edwin SC’s outstanding defensive performance.

The 1xCup 2026 is more than just a competition. The biggest stars of the fourth edition are attracting the attention of scouts and could get an opportunity to build professional careers. Many of the best players from previous editions of the 1xCup now play in Africa, Europe and Asia, while some have even earned places in the Nigeria national team.
