Don’t destroy Abia with hate speeches – NUJ tells politicians
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abia State Council, has advised politicians and their supporters to refrain from hate speech, inflammatory statements, violence and other acts capable of undermining the peace, security and stability of Abia State.
The NUJ made the call in Umuahia after its monthly congress held at the NUJ Press Centre, Aba Road, Umuahia.
In a communique signed by the Chairman of the NUJ, Abia State Council, Chidi Asonye, and Council Secretary, Ikechukwu Onuegbu, the journalists called for issue-based campaigns.
The NUJ commended the Abia State Government for commencing the payment of gratuities to Abia State pensioners, but called for the sustenance of the payment.
The Abia NUJ congress expressed concern over the reported infiltration of criminal elements in parts of Umuahia, Aba and other communities, noting that the alleged involvement of some youths in criminal activities can threaten public safety.
The journalists called on security agencies and community leaders to intensify surveillance, intelligence gathering and enforcement across the state to address emerging security challenges.
The NUJ expressed worry over exorbitant estimated electricity tariffs being imposed on power consumers in Umuahia and its environs and called for urgent intervention by the Abia State Government.
