Driving Change Where It Counts: HBM Nigeria takes sustainability to Oyingbo market
A clean environment is a healthy space, and what many see as waste is actually a valuable resource waiting to be repurposed.
Guided by this powerful mindset, HBM Nigeria Plc stepped away from boardroom conversations on World Cleanup Day 2026 and walked straight into the vibrant, bustling aisles of Oyingbo Ultra-Modern Market in Lagos. Recognising that true corporate social responsibility happens on the ground, HBM Nigeria partnered with the FABE International Foundation to deliver a high-impact waste management and environmental sensitisation campaign in the heart of one of the city’s most critical commercial hubs.
Because a massive portion of the fresh food Lagosians consume passes through open markets every day, the link between market sanitation and public health is direct and undeniable. Clean market stalls mean safer food, healthier traders and a better shopping environment for thousands of customers. Speaking during the clean-up exercise, Temitope Dosumu, Director of HBM-Eco Nigeria, emphasised why targeting Oyingbo Market was strategic: “People need to learn the purpose of waste management. What you see as waste today is actually a resource. Sensitisation is key. A clean environment is a healthy space.”
To ensure the initiative created lasting behavioural change rather than just a one-day event, HBM Nigeria and FABE International Foundation provided traders with practical orientation on sorting waste directly at the point of generation, separating organic food waste from plastics and recyclables. Beyond the sensitisation, heavy-duty waste bins, proper waste management kits, branded merchandise and protective parasols were donated to the market community to empower them in their daily operations.
The initiative earned strong commendation from public-sector stakeholders, including Lanre Shasore, Head of Street Sanitation Services at the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and Temitope Okunnu, Founder and CEO of FABE International Foundation, who both highlighted the power of corporate-civil partnerships in managing high-volume waste zones. Applauding the initiative, the Iyaloja of Oyingbo Market, Chief Mrs Olateju Ramot, expressed deep gratitude to HBM Nigeria, noting that equipping the traders with both knowledge and practical equipment gives the market community a renewed sense of pride and shared responsibility in keeping Oyingbo clean, healthy and sustainable.
