Fear of 2027’- Nigerian reacts to Tinubu’s 30-day fuel subsidy

Nigerians have taken to social media to express their displeasure over the Federal Government’s decision to introduce a 30-day fuel price discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, filling stations.

Speaking during a briefing in Abuja on Thursday, October 8, Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele said the initiative would see NNPCL sell petrol at cost, stressing that it was a discount and not a return of the fuel subsidy regime.

The Federal Government has also announced plans to peg the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petrol, at N1,350 per litre.

The announcement has, however, triggered mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media, with some questioning why the relief would last for only 30 days.

Here are some reactions gathered by DAILY POST:

@mundus wrote, “Calling this a ‘discount’ is just political semantics. By forcing NNPC to sell at cost and forfeit public revenue to lower fuel prices, the government is absorbing the financial loss. THIS IS A SUBSIDY.

Let’s call it what it is.”

@Tim wrote, “So this evil people know what they are doing? So Nigerians should enjoy fuel subsidy for one month? What happened after one month or when the election is over? God will take anyone supporting this evil people and hellbound party called APC.”

@KadunaRes wrote, “They are doing this because of elections. Once elections finish, your suffering will double. Use your head.”

@Shehu Gazali Sadiq wrote, “Ladies and gentlemen, Tinubu and his gang have responded to the fire on the mountain.

They’ve returned subsidy to NNPC fuel station for 1 month. The fear of Nigerians in 2027 is the beginning of wisdom for APC and Tinubu.”

@SylvesterIfe wrote, “25 to 35 naira discount, I don’t blame them they’re preying upon Nigeria tribalism and illiteracy. They want people more divided, uneducated and religious so they can be doing this and go free.”

@Reyastory wrote, “Why only 30 days?

What happened to the other days that will follow?”

@SodiqTade wrote, “Tinubu has realized pump price alone can make him lose election. Obi has reversed his earlier statement on subsidy too. Lol. Only Atiku has maintained his view on subsidy reversal this cycle. This should tell you who the most prepared candidate is among the three.”

@HAHayatu wrote, “Atiku has said it in his press conference few weeks ago that they will bring temporary subsidy back and go back after election, this is it. Believe this nonsense you believe anything.

Tinubu only cares about reelection not your welfare. Tinubu Must Go.”

@itzbasito wrote, “This is going to cause more chaos than the intended outcome.”

@JACK The Builder wrote, “Una no go fear kee. Now this is opposition! We now have APC where we want them. So Alhaji Bola and his team knew they could have cushioned the effect of Fuel Subsidy all these while but allowed Nigerians to suffer terribly for 3years?

They want to deceive Nigerians to vote for them briefly so they can come back and revert back to their wickedness against Nigerians We will not allow them.

We must vote APC out come 2027.”

@moolayinka1 wrote, “It is always temporary. Wicked Souls!”

@Demola OLAREWAJU wrote, “From insulting him to now shamelessly trying to copy Atiku’s manifesto, the APC is neither a thinking party nor a caring one – #TinubuMustGo #AtikuDeyCome

APC and other copycats should be dragged relent and I’m sure the PCC would release a statement soon.”

@ogund wrote, “Tinubu introduces a one month fuel subsidy. It appears Atiku has opened a can of worms. This kind of targeted relief didn’t have to wait until Atiku pledged to restore a targeted petrol subsidy if elected in 2027.

Nigerians could have received relief much earlier.”

@EOnyebueke wrote, “Jokers, APC the more you look the less you see.

This is not government at all. Nigerians should come together in 2027 and chase these criminals away out of power or else we will have ourselves to blame.”

@Emmanuel1730415 wrote, “They left Jan- Sept, 2023 to 2026 and then it’s 2 months to election and this? I said it. Gullibility is what ruins many in this country. | laugh at what this people will use our eyes to see after the election.(If they win).”

@Emmanu wrote, “Hey who do us this kind thing. Imagine giving us what belongs to us in little quantity like say we be beggars ooo. This APC don really see Nigerian people finish o.”

@son_oftheSoil wrote, “This our government is clueless oo, because of elections they’re trying to do this. They didn’t think about how this 30 day subsidy will cause lines will at the fuel stations cos people are trying to buy all the fuel they can get at this lower price.”

@Necheremdaniel wrote, “The federal government should know that there’s no NNPC mega station in the rural areas if this isn’t another fake promise.

They are yet to tell us the truth about fuel subsidy removal.”

@Belloolaitan5 wrote, “Please, after 30 days, what’s next? To go back to the usual normal price? What’s wrong with FG self? Is it because election is coming or what? What do they take us for?”
