I’m rich, but can’t support everyone — Rapper Lil Baby
American rapper Lil Baby has opened up about the financial pressure he faces from relatives and friends who constantly turn to him for money despite his success in the music industry.
The Atlanta-born rapper said his wealth was insufficient to meet everyone’s financial needs, explaining that many people close to him still struggled with the same economic difficulties he had escaped.
Speaking during the October 30 episode of The New York Times’ Popcast, Lil Baby admitted that becoming a successful musician had not completely separated him from the hardships of his earlier life.
“I’m rich, but I’m not rich enough for everybody,” he said.
The rapper explained that while his career had transformed his financial circumstances, many of his relatives and childhood friends continued to live under difficult conditions.
He said their frequent requests for assistance placed considerable pressure on him, particularly because those seeking help rarely considered how many others depended on his resources.
Using a hypothetical example, Lil Baby explained that a relative might request $2,000 and assume the amount was insignificant because of his celebrity status.
However, he noted that the same person would not consider the possibility of thousands of others seeking similar assistance.
According to the rapper, the challenge was not necessarily his unwillingness to help but the failure of some relatives to understand the limits of his financial capacity.
He suggested that people often viewed his success from the perspective of their personal needs without considering the wider responsibilities attached to his wealth.
Lil Baby also explained that his continued connection with friends and family experiencing financial hardship had influenced his music.
Although he no longer lived under the circumstances he frequently described in his songs, he said his relationship with those still facing such struggles allowed him to tell their stories.
