INEC not the problem, call your people working there to order – Aisha Yesufu tells Nigerians
Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has said that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is not the problem with Nigeria's elections, but the real problem is the Nigerians working inside INEC.
Yesufu made the statement in a post that has now gone viral on social media, where she challenged Nigerians to stop blaming institutions and start taking responsibility.
"INEC is not the problem. The people working in INEC are the problem. These people are not aliens; they are part of us. Let everyone call their people to order," Yesufu said.
According to her, the same failure is happening in other key institutions in the country, adding that the police, the military and the judiciary are facing the same problem, not because the institutions are bad, but because of the people running them.
She argued that no matter how good the laws and structures are, the system will continue to fail if the people operating it refuse to do the right thing.
Yesufu said Nigerians must stop pretending that the problem is coming from outside, when those compromising the system are Nigerians themselves.
She called on leaders, politicians, families and communities to take responsibility and call their own people to order, instead of hiding behind attacks on institutions.
