Kano govt arrests Singer market traders for changing expiry dates on products

The Kano State Consumer Protection Council, KCPC, has arrested some traders at Singer Market for allegedly changing the expiry dates of expired milk products.

In a statement signed by its Director of Public Enlightenment, Jamilu Mustapha Yakasai, the council said the operation was launched after the Deputy Chairman of the Traders’ Association, Aminu Umar Dogara, alerted it to the alleged practice.

The council’s Director of Monitoring of Traders and Products, Auwalu Muhammad, said officials were immediately sent to the market to investigate, leading to the arrest of the traders and the closure of the affected shops.

He said the council remained committed to protecting consumers from expired products and goods whose labels, condition or quality had been tampered with.

The Executive Secretary of the council, Dr Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, warned that the KCPC would not tolerate any action that violates consumers’ rights.

He said those found guilty would face prosecution and appropriate punishment under the law.

Dr Ibrahim commended market association leaders for cooperating with the council to stop the sale of substandard and adulterated products, saying their support would help protect public health.

He also appreciated the Kano State Government for supporting the council and allowing it to perform its duties without interference.
