Lagos announces traffic diversion on Independence Bridge for repairs

Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversion on Independence Bridge in Lagos Island as the Federal Ministry of Works begins urgent repairs on the bridge.
The repair works, which will involve asphalt resurfacing, are scheduled to begin at night on Friday, October 16, 2026, and continue throughout Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18, respectively.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, urging motorists to prepare for possible traffic disruptions during the repair period.
According to the statement, traffic management arrangements will involve the partial closure of sections of the bridge, with one lane remaining accessible to motorists at a time to allow movement towards their destinations.
The state government advised motorists to plan their journeys ahead and consider alternative routes while the repairs are ongoing.
It also disclosed that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, would be deployed to the area to regulate traffic and minimise inconvenience to road users.
Motorists were urged to exercise patience, comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic management officials throughout the repair works.
