Mexico finally clears Reno Omokri as Nigeria's ambassador

The Government of Mexico has accepted the appointment of former presidential aide, Reno Omokri as Nigeria's Ambassador to the country.
Omokri announced the development on Wednesday in a post on his X handle.
He said the Chargé d'Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, Mr Jose Manuel Briseño Flores delivered the agreement to the Director of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.
The delivery of the agreement means Mexico has formally accepted Omokri as Nigeria's envoy.
Omokri said he will serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
"To God be the glory, the Chargé d'affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States," he wrote.
President Bola Tinubu had nominated Omokri in November 2025 alongside 68 others, including former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The Senate confirmed the nominees in December 2025, while the President approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate on March 6, 2026, with Omokri assigned to Mexico City.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier disclosed that two countries – Mexico and Japan – were yet to issue their agreement but said consent would come in due course.
