Olojo Festival climaxes with pageantry, grand finale Monday
The 2026 Olojo Festival in Ile-Ife has reached its climax, with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, emerging from a seven-day spiritual seclusion and leading the traditional procession in the sacred Aare Crown.
The festival, themed “Cultural Preservation Through Sustainable Tourism,” has drawn visitors from across Nigeria and internationally, with the grand finale scheduled for Monday, September 28.
Spiritual Seclusion and Royal Procession
The Ooni commenced his seven-day seclusion on September 20, dedicating the period to spiritual communion, reflection, and prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, and progress . He emerged on Friday night, September 25, which coincided with Ojo Ilagun, the traditional day for community cleansing in Ile-Ife and the delivery of the Oonirisa’s Terrestrial Message to Mankind .
Upon emerging, the Ooni called on Nigerians to embrace peace and collective responsibility, urging political leaders to govern with fairness and compassion .
The spiritual retreat concluded with the Ooni offering prayers for the country’s leaders, communities, families, and young people, seeking divine intervention in national affairs .
Cultural Ceremonies and the Aare Crown
On Saturday, September 26, the festival featured the Official Olojo Festival Cultural Ceremony, the Okemogun Pilgrimage, and the Traditional Oonirisa’s Annual Cultural Procession . The climax of the celebration was the Ooni adorning the sacred Aare Crown—a relic believed to be the original crown of Oduduwa—followed by a traditional procession from the palace to Oke Mogun .
The Ooni was accompanied by a large crowd of indigenes, residents, cultural enthusiasts, and visitors from different parts of Nigeria and abroad . The procession drew attention online, with a video showing the monarch appearing visibly drained during a brief interaction with one of his queens, which many attributed to the intensity of the seven-day seclusion .
Community Events and Pre-Finale Activities
The festival’s prelude activities, held on September 24, included the Ayo Olopon traditional game competition, an Olojo Festival colloquium, and a Cultural Talent Hunt . The second edition of the Ile-Ife 5km Road Race also took place on September 24, bringing together participants from across West Africa and beyond as part of efforts to blend heritage with sports .
Friday, September 25, featured the Iwode Ife (community cleansing), the Oonirisa’s Terrestrial Message to Mankind, and the Ile-Ife Fashion Exhibition . The Gbajure Traditional Carnival and Adire Oodua Cultural Procession had earlier been held on September 19 .

The festival’s grand finale will be held on Monday, September 28, featuring the Oonirisa’s Ancestral Home Traditional Procession, Ojo Ibile, and the Cultural Talent Hunt Night at the ancient palace of the Ooni, Ile Oodua, Enuwa, Ile-Ife . The final day is expected to draw further crowds as the 2026 edition concludes.
Tourism and Economic Impact
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke used the occasion to call for greater investment in Ile-Ife’s cultural heritage, describing it as a potential driver for tourism, employment, and enterprise. The state government highlighted newly rehabilitated roads leading to the Ooni’s palace as evidence of a renewed push to position the state’s cultural assets as tourism attractions . The commissioner for Culture and Tourism noted that Ile-Ife alone hosts no fewer than 27 historical and cultural sites.
