The Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Prof. Clement Odunayo Adebooye, who was also conferred with an honorary doctorate award in Laboratory Science by the regulatory body, was praised by the council for his energy, academic and management ingenuity, versatility, and for assembling one of the best academic management teams that could be found anywhere in the world.

Adebooye, during his address, praised the University for recording successes and graduating well-rounded students in medical sciences and other fields.

This, he said, “is the result of the dedication of the system itself, which is comparable with the education of the people who work here, the spirit of togetherness, and the spirit of working together to move the university forward.”

He attributed the University’s accomplishments and continuous growth principally to the strong support the institution enjoys from Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State.

“It is on this note that I want to appreciate the government of the state under the leadership of our working governor, Senator Dr. Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke, for giving this university that opportunity to practice the autonomy of the university in practical terms. Today, many universities are on strike in our neighborhood because of the new salary scale. And some universities, even in oil-producing areas of this country, have decided that the new salary scale will take effect from January next year. Our own government in this state approved it with effect from January this year.”

He turned to the parents seated in the hall: “I’m saying this because your wards, your daughters, your sons entered this university exactly four years ago. And they completed their programs on time. It is not because of the magic of the administration, it’s as a result of the window and opportunity created by the state government for this University.”

He advised the new lab scientists to handle their practices with the highest sense of responsibility, saying, “the results of what you do determine what the doctor will do. You are the navigator. If your navigator points in the wrong direction, then you are heading for a wrong destination. So therefore, you must be a good guide for other medical practitioners.

“Every time, you need to show empathy. If you have to take blood from a patient, you have to persuade that person, moral persuasion. In your job, you are dealing with human life. An error in your work can deny a family its breadwinner. An error in your work can deny a family that has only one child such a child. An error in your work can lead to the deformity of a whole human being. So, wrong diagnosis is a big problem,” he said, urging them to be alive to their duty in line with the oath of the profession.

Prof Adebooye, delivering his address

The elated Professor prayed for the newly qualified medical scientists to achieve success guarded by divine inspiration and protection.

“Therefore, I wish you well as you go. The peace of our Lord Almighty be with you all. You will serve your parents immediately. People who have contributed to your successes will reap from the fruits that will be produced by your training industry,” Adebooye passionately prayed.

In his address, the Provost of the UNIOSUN College of Health Sciences, Prof. Daniel A. Adekanle, welcomed all to the ceremony and admitted the inductees as full-fledged laboratory scientists. He took time to explain the importance of the profession to every life and the enormous responsibilities a lab scientist shoulders.

“I welcome you all to the second induction ceremony of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Osun State University. On behalf of the College of Health Sciences, I proudly admit our new inductees on reaching this important stage of their professional journey. Your presence here today is evidence of your determination, perseverance, and true commitment to endow a new, special, and great profession.

“Distinguished guests, medical laboratory science is one of the fundamental pillars of modern healthcare delivery. Medical laboratory scientists’ contributions are essential to the right diagnosis, effective treatment, prevention, and monitoring of diseases.

“The high-tech clinical precision and laboratory investigations that provide the evidence upon which health professionals depend play a vital role in ensuring that patients receive appropriate and timely care.

“As you go places, you will therefore appreciate that a professional goes beyond completing academic requirements or conducting routine investigations. You are the custodians of diagnostic accuracy, advocates for patient safety, partners in clinical decision-making, and contributors to national health security.

Prof Daniel Adekanle

“Distinguished guests, the second induction ceremony is also an opportunity to recognise the commitment of Osun State University in producing competent, ethical, innovative, and socially responsible healthcare professionals. The College of Health Sciences remains committed to the pursuit of academic excellence, professional competence, impactful research and quality service.

“We recognise that producing outstanding medical laboratory scientists requires more than classroom teaching. It demands effective mentorship, practical training, modern laboratory facilities, strategic institution-to-professional partnerships, and a culture that embraces quality and accountability as crucial to learning.

“We will continue to work towards improving facilities and enhancing the quality of training offered in our college. I commend the academic and administrative staff who have contributed to the education and professional development of these inductees. Your dedication, guidance, and sacrifice have helped them to prepare for the responsibilities that lie ahead.

“I also acknowledge the contributions of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, the Clinical Laboratory Training Partners, parents, guardians, and well-wishers whose support has made this achievement possible. Your collective investment in these young professionals is an investment in the health and future of our nation.”
