Wike’s aide condemns school religious programme, calls for headmaster’s prosecution
Lere Olayinka, the media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called for the prosecution of the headmaster of a primary school where a pastor organised a Christian programme involving pupils.
Olayinka made the call following the circulation of a video showing schoolchildren participating in a religious programme and allegedly praying in tongues while being filmed.
Reacting to the incident, Olayinka said the school headmaster should be held accountable for allowing the programme take place within the school premises.
According to him, “public schools are meant for academic activities and should not be used for programmes capable of promoting a particular religion or denomination among pupils”.
He argued that permitting such activities in a government-owned school raises concerns about adherence to established regulations guiding the administration of public educational institutions.
The video, which has generated reactions on social media, showed a pastor leading the pupils during the programme while some of the children appeared to be praying in tongues.
As of the time of filing this report, education authorities had not issued an official statement on the matter.
