Inaccurate information, algorithmic bias undermine justice – Kaduna Attorney-General warns young lawyers

James Atung Kanyip

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kaduna State, James Atung Kanyip, has encouraged lawyers to embrace artificial intelligence and legal automation as tools for improving legal practice and access to justice, while exercising caution against their potential risks.

Kanyip made the call at the Votive Mass and Opening of the New Legal Year of the National Association of Catholic Lawyers, Catholic Diocese of Kaduna, held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Barnawa, Kaduna, under the theme, “AI and Legal Automation: Opportunities and Risks for Catholic Lawyers.”

The Attorney-General, who is also a member of the Association, said AI could assist lawyers with legal research, document organisation, routine drafting and information management, thereby reducing delays and costs while allowing practitioners to devote more time to complex legal matters and their clients.

He, however, warned that inaccurate information, algorithmic bias and breaches of client confidentiality could undermine justice if the technology was used without proper safeguards.

He stressed that lawyers must verify AI-generated information and remain professionally accountable for their work.

Kanyip further emphasised that technological advancement must uphold human dignity, fairness and the common good, reaffirming the Kaduna State Government's commitment to strengthening justice institutions and improving access to justice.
