The Lagos State Government has outlined plans to transform the state’s energy sector through private-sector investment, industry-wide collaboration and clean energy innovation ahead of the 2026 Lagos Energy Summit.
The summit, themed “Lagos Energy Evolution,” is designed to move discussions beyond the challenges of electricity supply towards practical, sustainable and implementable solutions to improve energy sufficiency across the state.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr Biodun Ogunleye, disclosed this at a press conference where he unveiled the vision, objectives and key focus areas of the forthcoming summit.
Ogunleye said the event would bring together stakeholders across the energy value chain, including regulators, electricity distribution companies, power generators, investors, energy suppliers, industry leaders, academics, engineers, innovators and development partners.
He explained that the gathering would provide an opportunity for experts to examine the challenges confronting the sector and develop a workable framework for achieving reliable and stable electricity supply.
The commissioner said Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial and industrial hub, was strategically positioned to develop energy solutions that could serve as a model for other states.
He also expressed the expectation that commissioners for energy from other states would attend the summit to share experiences and learn from Lagos’ development of its electricity market.
Among the key issues scheduled for discussion are energy sufficiency, affordability and accessibility, metering, clean energy development, electric mobility, and the deployment of efficient and interoperable energy infrastructure.
Ogunleye also announced that the summit would showcase the Lagos State Government’s Clean Energy Initiative, which will give secondary school students an opportunity to present innovative projects and practical solutions developed in their schools and communities.
He described the initiative as an investment in the next generation of energy innovators, stressing the importance of encouraging young people to participate in shaping the future of the sector.
The commissioner further highlighted the growing relevance of alternative energy sources, including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), electric vehicles and other cleaner energy solutions.
He said discussions at the summit would extend beyond electricity to explore how alternative energy sources could address Lagos’ wider energy needs.
On investment, Ogunleye acknowledged growing interest among private-sector investors and industry operators in partnering with the state government to expand energy infrastructure, improve service delivery and tackle existing market constraints.
He emphasised that achieving Lagos’ energy ambitions would require collective action involving government institutions, private-sector operators, investors, academics, innovators and citizens.
The summit is expected to attract between 1,000 and 1,500 participants, including distinguished speakers and experts from different segments of the energy industry.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Mrs Ibilola Kasunmu, said the summit was conceived to bring stakeholders across the electricity value chain together to identify challenges and jointly develop solutions.
Kasunmu welcomed participants at the press conference and urged industry players and members of the public to register and take an active part in the summit.
She said their contributions would help shape the discussions and recommendations expected to emerge from the gathering.
Those present at the press conference included the General Manager of the Lagos State Electrification Agency, Engr. KAT Balogun; Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ibile Oil & Gas, Mr Tayo Gbajumo; executive members of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC); and directors in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Other attendees included Dr Yetty Ogunnubi of YD Company and Engr. Simon Shaibu, Executive Vice President, Technical Services Directorate, GENESIS Energy Holdings Limited.
Their participation highlighted the importance of cooperation among government institutions, regulatory bodies and private-sector operators in advancing the state’s energy development agenda.
The Lagos Energy Summit 2026 is expected to strengthen stakeholder collaboration, stimulate investment, promote innovation and support the development of a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy market in the state.
The initiative forms part of Lagos State’s broader effort to build an energy ecosystem capable of supporting economic growth, industrial development and improved quality of life for residents.
