Police rescue stolen four-day-old baby in Abia, apprehend suspects
Abia State Police Command says it has arrested four persons over alleged conspiracy, child stealing and trafficking.
The Police Command also said it rescued a four-day-old baby and the baby’s mentally unstable mother.
A press release by the Police Command on Monday gave the names of the arrested suspects as Gladys Nathaniel, Victor Udochukwu, Chijioke Obunwa and Onyeonoro Chinwe.
The press release, which was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said officers of the Violent Crimes Response Unit, VCRU, Rapid Response Unit, RRU, Obehie, arrested the suspects on September 16, 2026, for conspiracy, child stealing and trafficking.
She said the suspects allegedly conspired to steal the four-day-old baby from her mentally unstable mother and subsequently sold the infant to another person, adding that the suspects were apprehended following a diligent investigation by the Police.
“The baby and mother were rescued. The mother has been released to her family for proper care and medical attention, while the infant has been handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs for protective custody,” the Police spokesperson said.
DSP Chinaka, who confirmed that the suspects are currently in Police custody, noted that investigation is ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, after which they would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
